Tamiya TL01 - on road
I bought the TL Chassis in 2000 from a little toy shop in Seaford, at the time the cheapest TL01 chassis was the Ford Focus WRC edition. I did use it for a short while with this body.
Shortly after purchasing I managed to get a VW Beetle RSI Bodyshell, painted it and fitted it to the chassis. The only issue being the longer rear body posts meant the body can flex and rub the tyres.
I have used this in the past at Bognor Regis on an old disused Air Field and it is pretty quick, especially with the spee tuned gear set installed and a sport motor. The rear can at times be a little loose but fitting the rear stabiliser set does appear to help with this issue.
The photos below were taken in the early 2000's, I will look through my catalogue to see if I have any more recent images which can be uploaded.
I am currently looking at turning this model into the a 4wd semi off-roader using parts from the Wild Dagger/Twin Detonator, once I get it up and running I will update the photos and description.
Tamiya TL01 - off road
I have been working on converting the TL01 to an off roader so that I can use it on grass and loose gravel. So far in testing I have found that larger wheels make it run longer, removing the speed tuned gear set also helps and changing the throttle settings to reduce top speed make a huge difference to how it performs off-road. I no longer want top speed but run time, less batteries and longer running time are what I crave.
I believe that Tamiya did make a full buggy off-roader using the wishbones, arms, suspension and hubs from the Wild Dagger/Twin Detonator. I have been working on this conversion to get it right. The main problems are the larger wheels, running time and the bodyshell. You can fit pretty most any off-road bodyshell, but I want it to be a Beetle and this has made it more difficult. I have managed to find a way and was to use magnetic body mounts to raise the bodyshell and clear the larger wheels.
