Tamiya Blitzer Beetle
This is my original Blitzer Beetle that my Dad bought me in 1998 from Mick Charles Models in Ewell. It was my first proper RC Car. After a few years of use I changed the rear shocks, fitted an Electronic Speed Controller along with a heat sink to help cool the motor. I have since returned this Beetle to stock and refitted the original Shocks.
I have now retired this model and it sits safely on the shelf at home.
I really like the Blitzer Beetle, it can handlt tarmac, gravel and short grass without hesitation. It is surpisingly fast for a semi off-roader. It is really easy to maintain as the gearbox is just 4 screws to remove and another 6 or so to take apart.
Tamiya Blitzer Beetle
This is my second Blitzer Beetle which I purchased used from the Sussex Model Centre in Worthing for £75, it came ready to go including a transmitter, battery and charger. Before use I stripped it down, which was a good choice as the bevel gears in the diff were worn and needed replacement. The bodyshell was adorned with loads of stickers which masked cracks as the Beetle had clearly been crashed and rolled many times. The fron nose was also damaged and needed to be moulded back with some flexible filler. I did find that after a while the drive shafts were wearing out, I worked out the rear arms and wishbones all needed replacement along with the rear uprights, now they take much longer to wear out.
The only problem I have found since with this Blitzer is that the front tyres were glued down, but not perfectly round which means the wheels are out of balance. This eventually caused the front uprights to fail whilst I was out using it.
The front lights have now been replaced for smaller LED versions that fit into the front nose and rear wings. I have also fitted a small cooling fan for the motor, whilst it doesn't make a lot of difference, it does help keep the motor a few degrees cooler than without it.
I have now converted this Beetle to Lipo Batteries. I have fitted a Hobbywing ESC, a Core RC 540 Motor and use a Voltz 50c 5000mah 2s and Core RC 40c 4000mah 2s battery. I have used the settings on the transmitter to slow the Beetle down, now combined these two batteries will last around 2 hours.
